Calculating the PSI

If you’re trying to very quickly understand the health or status of a project, do the following:

1. Score it against the six criteria previously described.

2. Add up the six scores to give a total.

3. If the project is at an early stage in its life and the total is below 40, there’s no problem. The low individual scores remind you where to focus your efforts.

4. If the project is at an advanced stage and the total is below 40, be very, very afraid. Happily, however, the low scores will point you at the issues that need to be addressed. Take the actions to address these issues as a matter of urgency.

5. Record the scores in Excel and repeat this exercise a week later. You could also draw a little graph which should show the PSI rising as the project proceeds.
