“Making predictions is always difficult,” Douglas W. Elmendorf said in a February 2010 interview with the Fiscal Times, a leading online news site dedicated to reporting the budgetary, financial, and economic issues facing the U.S government. Elmendorf serves the U.S. government as its chief budgeting officer. It’s his job to assess the legislation politicians and lawmakers create and to hammer out the viability of a new initiative’s budget. Elmendorf reviews and determines whether a proposal for extended health care coverage or a tax cut can survive financially.

As head of the Congressional Budget Office, Elmendorf’s opinion on all aspects of the government budget can wield strong influence. He gained experience as a budget analyst for the Congressional Budget Office before becoming a senior economist at both the Federal Reserve Board and the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at Princeton University before attending Harvard University to earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in economics. As part of his job, Elmendorf publishes dozens of reports and provides expert testimony before Congress and the House of Representatives on whether a legislative initiative is fiscally responsible.
