Try This with Your Team

Now let’s take a second look at The Canyon, but this time let’s apply it to your organization and your issues. Start by having this dialogue with a small group of people from your organization:

1. Look at The Canyon visual. What stands out to you?

2. Find the tornado representing external forces of change. Which ones do you believe are having the biggest impact on our organization?

3. What forces would you add to the tornado?

4. When you look at the chasm between managers and doers, what do you believe is most responsible for these gaps?

5. Where do you believe we have the most significant canyons in our organization?

6. What actions do you believe you can take to help bridge our organizational canyons?

Each time The Canyon visual has been used in small groups, supported by Socratic dialogue like the questions above, we have found that people at first might blame someone else for the chaos they face. However, people eventually experience a sense of shared vulnerability in recognizing that the canyon was created by everyone. They also realize that it will require everyone’s collective efforts to bridge the chasms at each level of the organization.

The shared assessment of an organization’s canyons begins to unlock the conclusions and behaviors of people in the organization because it makes an emotional impact by validating what they think, feel, and experience every day. We hear comments like, “This really depicts what it is like to work around here,” or “It is about time we talk about the real issues that are holding us back,” or “We are not on the same page because we are at different altitudes in the organization and see the world differently. We need to all be on the same page!”

Authentic conclusions emerge about the truth that we each hold as the keys to positive change.
