THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
C.S. LEWIS
Oh, to live in the world of Narnia and the Spare ’Oom, where gentle fauns take refuge from the bitter snow at home and hunker down with tea with crumpets. A place where a child can be a king or a queen and a wise old lion is always on hand to offer advice and save the day. A place where, of course, it’s always winter but never Christmas.
This fact puzzled me when I was a kid, coming from the Southern hemisphere where it in fact is winter but never Christmas. Regardless of the geographic confusion, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe remains one of my favourite C. S. Lewis tales of all times (with Prince Caspian coming a close second). It’s always a pleasure to return to the first in the Narnia series and even more enjoyable to come up with cookies that pay homage to this charming – and edgy – bit of childish delight.
Rectangular cookie cutters are slightly harder to find than round but I do recommend you snaffle them if you find them; you want to get the proportions exactly right for these wardrobe cookies. As far as decorating goes, I recommend looking up some images of wardrobe doors and drawing a basic design onto paper first, eliminating any unnecessary lines which will clutter the look.
After the cookies are baked and cooled, outline and flood in brown-tinted icing. Draw the details on free-hand using a 1.5 mm tip with black-tinted icing. It’s a good idea to practice first on a bit of paper if you’re not feeling confident. It took me a couple of goes to get these right. Another alternative is to draw the design onto your cookie with an edible ink pen, then simply follow the lines. Don’t forget a light dusting of icing sugar for the snow!
