Thirteen

Three days later I was seated in my father’s box at the Collins feeling paranoid and jumpy.

“This is quite exciting,” Jane said from beside me.

I glanced at my friend before replying. “You’ve been here before.”

“Yes, well, not when I knew one of the stage performers.”

A reluctant smile tugged my lips.

Quinton leaned around the other side of Jane. “You still don’t know one of the performers.”

Jane frowned. “Are you both trying to ruin this for me? I am excited for Eliza. She knows Silas Viso. Therefore I also know Silas Viso. In a way.”

“You’re correct. I will not utter another word to dim this experience for you.” Q’s lips quirked indulgently at his wife before he leaned back in his seat.

“Thank you,” she replied smartly.

Following our afternoon tea on Wednesday, Jane had insisted on meeting Nicolas. I was reluctant to attend the theater with Melinda as an unknown quantity in my life. But Jane vowed to bring Quinton with us and the plan was hatched. Our schedules aligned for this Saturday evening showing.

I wasn’t entirely sure how to avoid Melinda’s notice following the play. I was hopeful that she would return to the residence and I could simply send word to Nicolas to meet us in the box after the performance.

I needn’t have worried because Melinda wasn’t performing this evening. An understudy had taken her place.

In Nicolas’s opening monologue, he must have caught sight of us in our seats because he gave me a long look while reciting his lines. And then the same boy who’d retrieved Cassandra and myself at the previous show, arrived during the intermission with a message from Nicolas saying he’d come to us following the final act.

Once my worries over communicating with Nicolas and evading Melinda had been resolved, I still couldn’t settle my nerves.

Jane was bright-eyed and watchful throughout the play. Quinton was his quiet, stoic self.

Meanwhile, I sat next to them with my stomach in knots and my fingers clenched in the skirt of my dark blue velvet gown. The thought of seeing Nicolas again after that night in my bedchamber made me anxious. Nothing had happened. Not really. Nicolas had been silly about his splinter, and then serious and concerned over my safety. After that embrace, he’d slowly pulled away and said goodnight. I’d threatened him with bodily harm if he tried to climb down the trellis while holding a large blanket, so he’d cheerfully allowed me to smuggle him through the kitchens and out of the house.

There hadn’t been anything of consequence to happen, but this new beginning between us felt very fragile. We were making new memories together, a future. And my heart didn’t know how to feel about that.

I’d received a new letter from Nicolas yesterday. Another friendly letter simply telling me about his day and that he hoped we could dance together soon. I wanted that, I’d realized. Desperately.

I didn’t know how to resolve those conflicting ideas. I wanted Nicolas’s friendship and the fresh start we’d promised one another.
