Chapter Thirteen

“MAY I say, my lord is looking quite well today,” Pendel said as he handed me my tea on the second morning after Fox left me.

“Thank you, Pendel. I am feeling quite well.” Despite the bitterness of my medicine, I hid a smile behind my cup.

“Your uncle’s visit brightened your spirits.”

He spoke it as a statement, but I heard the questions in it, and a little of my good cheer faded as I washed the taste away with a sip of my tea. I hadn’t received any word from my uncle yet, though I tried to be patient about it. He’d said he needed to think and to send out inquiries. I didn’t know how long that should take, but surely more than just a day and a night.

“Yes. I was glad to speak with him as one man to another at last,” I replied absently.

“Yes, my lord.”

Pendel had seemed happy for me before, but a strange note in his voice caught my attention. Guilt prodded me a little as I realized I hadn’t given Pendel an opportunity to speak during my discussion with my uncle. The decisions would affect him as well as me. Pendel disliked change, almost as much as I did. If all went as I hoped, there would be a great many changes in the near future. Add to that all that I was keeping secrets from him, and I was not rewarding his loyalty very well. I should at least make an effort to be kinder to him.

“Thank you, Pendel, for your patience with me and your kindness. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

He blinked at me a moment, before he smiled ever so slightly and he bowed. “That’s very kind of you, my lord. As always, it’s a pleasure to serve.”

The usual lethargy began to steal over me, and as much as I hated it, I looked forward to the respite from my thoughts. A few hours of oblivion meant I was that much closer to seeing Fox again, and hopefully that much closer to some sort of word from my uncle.
