Hashmi employs a discourse of ‘biological determinism’ supported by religious inferences so any angst at the growing realisation of the inequality of distribution of resources in Pakistan and the gendered reality of the Pakistani community and family is suppressed by her arguments. In her lectures she refers to ‘scientific’ proof that confirms what she has been lecturing her students about all along:

I am quoting now from Man, the Unknown. This is by Alexis Carrel (she proceeds to spell out his name), and he has received a Nobel Prize for his work. He says that in his work he researched the differences between men and women and… the difference was not only of the sexual organs, the womb, it was of level of comprehension, the difference was in their tissues, the chemical balances, each cell, its secretions was different. Now how can we go on ignoring these differences? These women's liberation people asked that remove differences between the genders, give same kind of education to everyone. This is wrong, for even in each cell of a woman she has femininity; it's in her nervous system. You cannot change it all now by providing same education and all that they are asking for, can you? So women I feel should develop themselves according to their biology, and whatever they can contribute will have as much to do in developing civilisation. Now a lot of problems, mental and physical, occur because women are fighting their physical constitution and try thinking like men (From Hashmi's commentary on the Quranic verse Surah 4 (Al-Nisa), 2002a).
