1 Recall that at this time everyone believed that adequate fluid ingestion was essential for maximizing performance during prolonged exercise and that carbohydrate ingestion was of no value. There was no scientific proof that carbohydrate ingestion improved performance, so most scientists, following David Costill’s lead, discounted the possibility that carbohydrate ingestion improved performance. At the sports medicine conference that preceded the 1984 American Medical Joggers Association 80 km ultramarathon in Chicago, Bruce Fordyce established a United States All-Comers 50-mile record of 4:50:51. In response to Fordyce’s question to Dr. Costill, Dr. Costill said that carbohydrate ingestion during exercise was more likely to impair than to improve his performance. But Bruce did not agree, informing Dr. Costill, as he told me later, “I am unable to run my best in races of 80 km unless I ingest a high-carbohydrate drink during the race.” Only in 1986 would the first irrefutable evidence be presented to confirm what Bruce had discovered for himself—that carbohydrate ingestion during prolonged exercise improves performance.
