Diaphragmatic Breathing

This method is called “diaphragmatic” because it involves breathing anchored at your diaphragm, those muscles and tendons about half way down your upper body that separate the chest and abdominal cavity. It’s considered a “deep” breathing technique (Remsberg calls it “belly breathing.”)

Try the following:

•Quickly count to 3 and then take a breath as quickly as you can.

•Hold it for about 2 seconds and then return to breathing normally.

What did you notice? If you’re like most, you might be aware of several things. First, your breath (if inhaled quickly) probably was not deep. Further, if you remember your posture, you probably felt your chest and shoulders tense and lift towards your ears until you exhaled. What emotional state does this posture resemble? Most say it feels and looks like the state of being scared, surprised or shocked.
