Long-term storage – wedding dresses

For long-term storage of precious garments, such as wedding dresses or christening gowns, fold the fabric using acid-free tissue paper and store in acid-free storage boxes. Do not use ordinary cardboard boxes as these may contain harmful chemicals that will cause yellowing over time. As the garment will be stored for a long period without wear, it is at risk of permanent creasing, so don’t hold back with the tissue paper – fill the arms and bodice with rolled-up sheets and fold the veil and train with layers of tissue paper to protect it as much as possible. It is advisable to check on the dress every year or so to inspect for any damage – this is also an opportunity to re-fold the garment along slightly different lines to minimise the risk of permanent creasing. If you are storing a very valuable vintage garment for a long time that has metal buttons, wrap each individual button with tissue paper to prevent them from staining the fabric.
