Walking in Northern France

Most British visitors speed through northern France on their way south, unless they want to visit the battlefields of the First World War. They imagine it to be full of factories and mines interspersed with featureless countryside. Walking across the region I saw much more variety than I had expected: constantly changing landscapes and architectural styles in the different pays, from Lorraine to the Ardennes, the Thiérache and then Flanders and the Nord. For a hiker bent on discovery it was an ideal environment.
