Frederick stepped back to let his aunt and uncle enter the floor before him. The trio was assailed by the smells of unfinished oak, pine, and maple and oils and machinery as soon as they stepped inside. Dust motes danced in the sunrays streaming through the large windows around the building.

“What do I hear, Frederick?” Juju shouted.

Fred pointed to the back right corner of the thirty-thousand-square-foot factory. “Do you want earplugs?” He’d become inured to the persistent, high whine of the equipment—the sanders, planers, and saws—but it could grate on newcomers. Fred considered the sound money to his ears.

“No, I’m talkin’ ’bout that.” She pointed to one of the sets of speakers mounted to a high beam in the ceiling.

Fred laughed as he tuned into “You Brought the Sunshine.” “Oh! That’s the Clark Sisters. ‘You gave me peace; you gave me grace . . .’” His head bopped.

Juju swatted his fingers holding on to her chair. “Boy, I know who’s singin’. I want to know why they’re singin’ in here? This is a place of business. How do they feel about that?” She indicated the people working in various areas on the floor.

“Why you wond’rin’ what they think about it? From the looks of thangs, I bet the Lord is pleased,” Uncle Lawrence pronounced.

“Well, there’s a difference between a Sunday and a Monday, and I’m not talkin’ ’bout the spellin’. This isn’t church. Not everybody likes gospel music or believes in God. What about management?”

“It’s about livin’ the gospel, and it seems like our nephew is doin’ that. Wasn’t Jesus a carpenter?”

Julia cut her eyes at her husband and snapped, “A poor one.”

“Well, we’re not poor, and I’m the only management you need to worry about. George & Company has been in business for nearly a century, and it’s getting stronger and bigger every day thanks to me. According to Knox, we’re a family, and my ‘family’ listens to gospel music when they work.” Was it just yesterday that McKinley talked to him about building relationships at the office? Fred shook off the thought.

“If folks don’t like it, they’re free to go somewhere else. It’s not a plantation; I don’t own a soul working here. Now, why don’t we go on over to this side and see what’s goin’ on?” Striving to get the derailed tour back on track, Fred gestured toward the tall woman directing a group of five people. He walked slowly down the aisle so that Uncle Lawrence could keep pace with them.

He waved at the group. “That’s my new foreman who runs the first shift. She calls the lead team together at seven thirty every morning so they can review that day’s needs—orders, plans, problems from the day and night before. She stays on until four, when she typically passes the baton to DJ, the second shift foreman. His group either finishes up what the early shift started or prepares for the next.” He kept strolling and nodding at his employees.
