2. Slip the needle under the circle and come up through the circle.

3. Pull both tails of the circle to make the knot.

4. Insert the threaded needle into the quilt top and batting (not the backing) an inch away from the point at which you want to start quilting. Bring the needle up at the spot you plan to start stitching. Gently tug the thread until the knot “pops” in between the layers. This is called burying the knot.

Bury the knot.

5. Put the hand without the thimble under the quilt, positioning your pointer or middle finger—whichever is more comfortable—where you will be taking the first stitch.

THIMBLE ON MIDDLE OR POINTER FINGER

1. Place your hand with the thimble on top of the quilt. Hold the needle straight up and down …

… between your thumb and ring finger (if thimble is on middle finger).

or

… between your thumb and middle finger (if thimble is on pointer finger).

With the hand in the “C” position, insert the needle straight down into the quilt where the hill has been created by your finger underneath.
