MY STORY

A Broken Bowl

One dark evening I remembered I still needed to empty the dishwasher. I wanted to finish the job before my son came back to pick up his dog after he did some errands. The artificial lighting did not reach inside the cupboard; but that had not been a problem, because I knew the place for each item. I reached to the top shelf with one of the good salad bowls, but didn’t realize the stack was tipping. The bowl crashed off the shelf, smashing into hundreds of small pieces that landed on the counter and, mostly, the floor.

I didn’t want my son to know about my accident, so I started to pick up the pieces myself—a difficult task when I couldn’t see them. I got out the broom and swept up some pieces, but I knew others had landed on the rug way over in front of the sink. It was too much for me to handle, so I knew I’d have to ask my son to take care of the rug—and to pick up the glass shards I was sure I’d missed on the counter and the floor.

I was frustrated and angry with myself. When my son finally arrived, he could tell by my stricken face that something was wrong. When I told him what had happened, instead of being annoyed, he just started the cleanup. He found large pieces of glass on the counter. I was incredulous that I hadn’t seen them. My son expressed no hint of aggravation as he made sure he had picked up each piece of glass. This experience really brought home the fact that it is not just the person with vision loss who needs the gift of patience.
