Of course, we carried with us many of our own ways of doing, to the no small astonishment of the foreigners. For instance, our leader had a natural anxiety that none of his party should go astray, so when he thought there was some danger of that, he blew a blast upon a whistle! It proved too much for the official mind in Berlin, where a policeman was nearly thrown into a fit at the sound, and directed that it was never to be done again, a command more honoured in the breach than in the observance.

Things were less frenetic at the PTA’s main base – its chaléts in Lucerne. The attractions of a Poly holiday here were manifold. The chalets themselves were a secure, known quantity in a location where the tourists could relax and mingle with their fellow guests. The lake and its surrounding features, including mountains, offered an accessible set of adventures, within easy reach. Wilfred Bryant told his father that ‘the original buildings were formerly a monastery & then passed to an artist’s hands: whether the fine old furniture & armour & pictures & statuary belonged to the monks or the artist or were purchased by Mr Mitchell I have not yet discovered’. (In fact Mitchell had made a number of astute second-hand buys soon after securing the chalets for the Polytechnic.)

Many tours arrived on a Saturday night, enabling tourists to spend the Sunday resting and acclimatising. Again Robery Avey Ward gives a vivid summary:
