Linguists parse sentences in their own special way, using their own concept of grammar. They imagine the sentence as a “constituent structure tree,” and they graph it so that it looks like an upside-down tree with the trunk at the top (the whole sentence) and the leaves (words or morphemes) at the bottom. In the middle of this strict hierarchy are the branches (“constituents”), which represent phrases.6 Here’s how linguist Steven Pinker diagrams our original sentence:

O SYNTAX TREE,

O SYNTAX TREE . . .

If you want more on diagramming, check out A Walk in the WoRds, a blog kept by linguist Laura Payne. She mentions the Reed-Kellogg diagrams, but has more fun with syntactic trees, the diagrams preferred by linguists. Payne features a “parse tree puzzle” and a delightful Christmas tree.
