After Goldman’s departure from Barre, copies of her planned fourth

lecture were printed and disseminated throughout the area. The account

of her stay in Barre is a rare look into what was actually occurring in the community and how officials were in the midst of breaking the very law they were supposed to uphold. This type of interaction would also explain some situations, like that of Catherine Dillon in St. Albans, where the enforcement and penalties were highly suspect.

In Barre and Hardwick, though, something different also occurred during prohibition. Many Italian women in these cities lost their husbands to the granite quarries and the illness, known as silicosis, that stemmed from breathing all the granite dust. To support their families, many widowers turned their homes and living rooms into cafés, serving their cooking and often wines and spirits, just as Mrs. Colletti had done. Later cases at the turn of and just after the twentieth century, in both Washington and Caledonia Counties, featured many Italian women who were cited to appear for violation of the Liquor Law.
