When they got home, Asher immediately noticed that something was wrong. He’d make sure to turn off all the lights when they left, but now as he was taking his shoes off, he could see a flickering light coming from the living room.

What was that?

Could it be?

It seemed like fire.

Apparently José noticed his hesitation because he asked, “Something wrong?”

“You did something, didn’t you?”

“You think I would dare surprise you twice in one day?”

“You totally would. You’re a bastard like that.”

“Well, in that case, why don’t you go check it out?” José was wearing his little grin that said he was up to something. Asher wasn’t sure if he even wanted to know what. But now that his curiosity was piqued, he had to go find out. Slowly, he stepped into the living room. What he saw there made his mouth drop open.

Candles.

At least a dozen of them. Someone had moved the table aside to arrange them in a heart shape on the floor. That was so cheesy.

But also so pretty.

José stepped up behind him. “Do you like it?”

Asher wanted to glare at him for rendering him speechless a second time that day, but he couldn’t take his eyes off the candle. “When… How…?” he managed finally.

“I had a friend arrange this while we were out. I know that lately you’re trying hard not to look at fires and all that, but I just thought… If you weren’t a pyro and I hadn’t been a fire elf the first time we met…”

“I thought you were hot before I knew you could control fire.”

“But you became obsessed with me after you found out.” José didn’t seem too bothered by that fact, but Asher couldn’t let it stand like that.

“The fire was why I wanted to fuck you, but it was never the reason I…” Asher finally tore his gaze away from the candles to look at his boyfriend. “That’s not why I love you.”

José raised an eyebrow at him, as if waiting for Asher to go on. Asher realized he’d never thought too much about why he loved José, but he knew it wasn’t because of the fire. It was because…

“It’s stuff like this.” He gestured at the candles, even though he knew José couldn’t see them. And wasn’t that just one more reason to love him? Because he arranged things like this solely for Asher’s benefit, because he knew that Asher was a pyro and he didn’t mind. Because José never made him feel like he had to be better, but only that he wanted to be better.

Asher didn’t know how to put all of this into words. He’d always struggled with stuff like this, but it seemed that José understood anyway, at least going by the smile on his face.

“I know,” he said. “There’s food to by the way. Nothing too sweet, because I know you hate that, but some fingerfoods and—“

“You’re doing all this and I didn’t get you anything,” Asher interrupted him. Seriously, he was starting to feel bad.
