Chapter 5

Call 4

4th call: July 28, 2014

Thompson: “I’m telling you. I did [send] a hundred thousand pages [to Congressman Posey’s office].”

The fourth and final recorded call is almost seven weeks after the third call. During the second call, Dr. Hooker learned that Dr. Thompson hired a whistleblower attorney. During the third call, Dr. Thompson learned that Dr. Hooker was on the verge of publishing a paper about the 2004 MMR study.

*************

DR. HOOKER: Hello.

DR. THOMPSON: Hey Brian.

DR. HOOKER: Hey, how you doing?

DR. THOMPSON: Alright. How are you?

DR. HOOKER: Good. Just trying to figure out how to use the new iPhone 5 that I got; my plan finally upgraded. It took me two frickin years, but I finally upgraded to a normal phone. Yeah, how’s your summer going?

DR. THOMPSON: Oh, it’s going pretty good. We were in Chicago last week for vacation; that was good.

DR. HOOKER: Oh wow. You’ve got family there, right? You’re pretty close to Wisconsin and Chicago.

DR. THOMPSON: Yeah. A brother and sister that live in Chicago and the kids were in a Blues camp and …

DR. HOOKER: A Blues camp, that’s awesome.

DR. THOMPSON: Yeah. It was really fun and they got to play in The House of Blues which was really cool.

DR. HOOKER: What do they play? They’re both instrumental musicians?

DR. THOMPSON: Yeah. My son plays the drums. My daughter plays electric guitar and lead singer.

DR. HOOKER: Oh, no way.

DR. THOMPSON: Yeah.

DR. HOOKER: Now I know what your retirement plan is. They just need to get famous.

DR. THOMPSON: Well, we joke about the lake house. They’re going to get it.

DR. HOOKER: That’s good. Well, well … My son and I …

DR. THOMPSON: Well, how are you doing?

DR. HOOKER: Good. … we hit a deer.

DR. THOMPSON: Yeah.

DR. HOOKER: I don’t know if I told you that.

DR. THOMPSON: No.

DR. HOOKER: We were up in the mountains. Up north of Redding, toward Mount Shasta. And my son is really into instrumental music, only like marching bands.

DR. THOMPSON: [Affirmative response.]

DR. HOOKER: And so there are these professional marching bands called Drum and Bugle Corps, and there was one practicing up … They practice up in the mountains, because it’s the only place in California that actually gets cool. And so, we were up there checking them out practicing, and we headed home. We had like a sixty-mile drive home and pasted a deer right at dusk. In fact, I never saw it.

DR. THOMPSON: How fast were you going?

DR. HOOKER: About sixty-five. It was on the freeway.

DR. THOMPSON: Oh my gosh.

DR. HOOKER: It was horrible. [UI].

DR. THOMPSON: So what happened?

DR. HOOKER: Well we had a ’96 Ford Explorer that’s what we hit it in. And those things are pretty impervious, so we were okay. But the airbags deployed and that alone was wild.

DR. THOMPSON: Oh.

DR. HOOKER: I never …

DR. THOMPSON: Did you airbag burn that everyone talked about?

DR. HOOKER: Yep. Yep. You’re the first person that’s actually nailed it. No, we had burn marks. We had bruises. And the stuff, the stuff that they use to get it to inflate just stinks to high heaven.
