Bookman Old Style is a similar serif font to Times New Roman, but just different enough to be distinguishable. The aim is to draw attention to the fact that two languages are being used, rather than to the typeface itself. Typographical representation of another language being used is a technique employed by Yann Martel in the novel Life of Pi (2001), where the use of Japanese is indicated by italics and an in-text reference (cited in Stratton 2004). In my case the use of italics would be unhelpful in a text where it is already multifunctional. To help the reader appreciate the code-switching, I include a specific reference in the translator’s preface to the fact that all English words and phrases appear in a different typeface.
