ANDREW CARNEGIE

While John Rockefeller Sr. and his family retained a reputation for brutally crushing labor opposition, Andrew Carnegie is traditionally portrayed as the epitome of a “good capitalist.” Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835 to poor parents and immigrated to the United States when he was thirteen. Through hard work and a painfully acquired education, Carnegie began to rise through the ranks of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.

Both Carnegie and the company benefited considerably from the Civil War, in which railroads were key as a means of transporting troops and supplies. After the war, Carnegie turned his energies to the construction trade, though he retained his railway connections. The period of post-war rebuilding required vast amounts of iron, and Carnegie’s company was able to supply this and to secure many construction contracts, the foundation of his large fortune.
