Testicular Injuries

The anatomic characteristics of the testis protect it from injury. Its mobility and the strength of the tunica albuginea provide important safeguards from external trauma.

Etiology

Most testicular injuries result from blunt trauma (80 %) and are usually unilateral. The most common causes are sport-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and assaults.

Penetrating testicular injuries most frequently result from gunshots with one-third involving both testes. Most are associated with multiple injuries including to the thigh, penis, perineum, pelvis, urethra, and femoral vessels. Stab wounds involving the testes most often are self-inflicted during attempts at emasculation.
