{-Chapter Twenty-five-}

They all overslept. Apparently being curled up together made it even harder than usual for Matt and Zeke to crawl out of bed on a cold December morning. Consequently they all rushed around trying not to get in each other’s way as they hastily crammed toast and cereal down, and gathered up what they needed for the day ahead. Zeke had forgotten his phone - again - and burst back into the flat, his car engine running, as Matt, door key poised to lock up, remembered something too. They both dashed inside, and Matt was quicker.

“Would you take this to someone for me, Claire?” he asked, holding out a thin, rectangular package wrapped in brown paper. “I’ve been worried about trusting it to the post, or even a courier.”

Zeke, clutching his phone as he ran back down the steps, stopped to say a final goodbye to Claire. “That the thing for your godson?” he nodded at the parcel, and Matt flushed at the same time Claire exclaimed, “Godson?”

“Yeah. I’ll see you later, Zeke.” He held the packet up. “Will you? It’s in Shoreham though, you’d have to drive over.”

Claire smiled at him indulgently. “Of course I will, silly, find a space in my bag. What’s so precious about it?” They set off at a brisk pace to the underground station.

“It’s not precious exactly, but it will be to him. It’s a tin of colouring pencils. Good ones, obviously, he’s very artistic. I was worried they’d get broken, that’s all.”

“That’s thoughtful of you, Matt. You’ll have to give me his address though. How old is he?”

“Eleven. Started secondary school back in September, he’s finding it tough. The art helps take him out of his head, and I want to encourage it.”

“Sounds like someone else I know,” she observed, and Matt bumped his shoulder against hers. “Yes, well, I had a bratty little sister and a sexual identity crisis, I needed my art.”

They were swaying together as the carriage rattled towards the west of the city when Claire said wistfully, “That’s what I missed nearly as much as you.”

“What?”

“The little pictures you used to do for me. Sometimes I used to cry myself to sleep holding one of them.” She shook herself. “I’ve still got them all, in a photograph album that Mum bought me to keep them safe. That’s why I always made you draw me something when you came down. I thought you’d keep coming if you did. What a weird kid I was.” She smirked up at him. “And here’s where you say ‘You still are, Peanut.’“

Matt’s expression was serious though. “I did miss you, so much. You and Mum. I just…I just had to make it a clean break. I was terrified I’d kill him if I saw him again.”

“Seriously?”

He nodded. “I had so much rage. How could he dare do something like that to a child, his child, his flesh and blood? You’re supposed to love your kids unconditionally.”

“Is this tied up somehow to this godchild you have?”

A fond smile broke through Matt’s frown at the mention of the boy.
