What to Watch For

A lot of what this chapter discusses are situations of teams or people not being able to speak to their reality without fear of retribution or being judged as negative. Organizations are often structured in ways that value the opinions of executives and make people under them afraid to speak up. This can create organizational blind spots that are hard to overcome.

Left unchecked, these blind spots can result in confirmation bias so people in the organization seek to create narratives that reinforce their preconceptions rather than challenge them. Ultimately, managing and overcoming expectations requires presenting facts without fear that, in contradicting an accepted narrative, the messenger is not labeled as “negative.”
