In 1861, Lone Mountain was a Catholic cemetery for gold miners, silver barons, wealthy businessmen, and politicians. Today, it is the site of the Lone Mountain campus of the University of San Francisco.

This aerial photograph of Lone Mountain and the San Francisco College for Women was taken on December 26, 1935, immediately after a landslide brought part of the mountain down onto Parker Avenue.

The management of the first student newspaper of St. Ignatius College included, from left to right, Edward McQuade (editor), James Smyth (business manager), and John Lounibos (associate editor).
