Overcoming Obstacles

Success is not measured by the heights one attains, but by the obstacles one overcomes in its attainment.

—Booker T. Washington

How many times have you looked at a situation in your life and wondered, “How could God do this to me? There is no possible way I can get out of this!” Perhaps, you just broke down in tears, thinking you were stuck in that situation and had no idea of what would happen to you and your family.

Whenever I think the world is a difficult place and everything seems overwhelming, I cannot help but humble myself and remember one single woman whose courage triumphed against all odds. She was one of the greatest spiritual teachers who ever lived and is a perfect example of how to overcome any obstacle in your path. At the age of one and a half, she became blind and deaf. She used her obstacle not as a crutch, but as a vehicle to open the door to understanding herself and to share her insights and knowledge with her fellow beings. She was able to encourage others to live the fullness of life. If we could see even a glimmer of what she was able to do despite her affliction, we would appreciate every moment of our lives. Her name is Helen Keller. She said: “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”

By now in your journey through the words on these pages, I hope you have reached a moment of reevaluation. By reviewing the points about life and death and the choices that create the in-between life, you may well have a very different perspective on, or at least some insight into, how to choose to behave in life’s situations. I know that with this new understanding you can begin to live a more productive life, in a more responsible manner, and release old patterns of control and negative behaviors.

In life there are always obstacles. As one of my guides, RaMa, once told me, obstacles are opportunities to learn more about ourselves and the world in which we live. Life would certainly be boring, and we would not grow, if there were no disagreements, conflicts, and unexpected traumas in our lives. Learning to overcome them is what life is all about. When things seem bad, I always remember a song that pulled Annie out of the doldrums: “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow.” It’s true.

Stop for a moment and seriously think about your predicament. There may be days when you can barely lift your head off the pillow in the morning, because all appears to be lost. But you know, as part of your human makeup, you have a survival instinct deep down in your core. You want to keep hope alive for a new day, and on that new day you may see something different about your circumstance that you didn’t see the day before.
