Stimulation of the center of the field (Ex) excites the cell; surround stimulation (In) inhibits firing of the cell. (b) Some neurons are movement and even direction sensitive. Movement of a tactile stimulus in one direction vigorously activates the cell; movement in the other direction only weakly excites it.
