Test tube studies have found a cooperative interaction between certain drugs to lower cholesterol (especially fluvastatin) and hepatitis C treatment. It seems that these statin drugs amplify the effects of alpha interferon, resulting in a much more effective treatment than the common combination of interferon with ribavirin. With regards to fluvastatin, however, the effective concentration is roughly ten times higher than the normal concentration found in the blood of patients taking daily doses of the drug. Another conundrum is the fact that statin drugs can damage the liver. Further research and development could yield more effective drugs in the fight against hepatitis C.[11]
