Having settled upon a theme, the A3 report author should convey any pertinent background information that is essential for understanding the extent and importance of the problem or opportunity and how it relates to company goals or values. The more varied the audience that will read the report, the broader the background information will need to be.

Figure 4.2 shows a background section for our Corporate Credit Card Implementation A3. In this case, the pertinent background information is summarized in a few bullet points to put the next section (current condition) in context. Particularly, the author highlights that administrative head count is likely to grow along with organization growth unless more efficient systems can be implemented; that the current system is largely paper-based and therefore slow and cumbersome; and that $100 purchase orders (POs) require the same amount of processing expense as $100,000 POs. Although no company goals are explicitly identified, it clearly plays to the company goals of reducing costs and improving productivity of internal operations.

The purpose and content of the background section of the proposal A3 is similar to that of the problem-solving A3. We reiterate the key points here for convenience:
