Chapter Twelve

And Then it was Friday

The week continued on like usual. Everything was as it should have been. Delia and Trevor were extra schmoopy in the hallway in-between class time, classes were attended, life was boring. I bided my time, watching and trying to not let the anticipation of Friday get to me. To say I was excited was an understatement. There might not be a word that exists in the English language for the amount of joy I felt.

I just had to make it to the evening.

So did Delia and Trevor.

“I got a table at Bridge over Beeker for tonight,” Trevor said, giving her the most lovesick eyes ever. He smiled down at her, and he totally believed her when she said everything was fine. She’d been so good at playing him, I was proud.

Delia let out a quiet whistle. “Are you sure you can afford that? It’s so fancy. We don’t have to, you know. I’d be happy with burgers from Vamps.”

“Edward owed me a favor,” Trevor explained. “He wiggled us in and he’s going to give us his employee discount.”

“Wow! You must have done quite the service to be owed such a favor. And from Edward of all people.”

Trevor nodded, leaving out the part about how the service was saving Edward’s life from a mutant squirrel. Okay, the squirrel probably wouldn’t have actually killed Edward, but they’re nasty and have nasty diseases that are harder to kill than the average virus. Edward, being a transplant into the town from another time period, was known for struggling with blending in. He didn’t take help from just anyone. But again, mutant squirrel. I don’t think I need to explain it more.

She gave his hand a squeeze. “Then I guess we’re going to the Bridge. I’ve never been! This is so exciting!”

“Make sure you meet the dress code tonight!”

“Okay.” The bell rang. “One more class!”

He gave her a soft smile. “One more class.”

A knot formed in his stomach. Why was he so nervous? Could he sense the impending doom that was about to befall them? He watched her leave and tried to shake the feeling. It didn’t seem to want to leave. Guardian intuition, such a pain.

Trevor walked into his classroom and found his usual seat toward the front. Next to him sat Ajay. He glanced over at his cyborg friend and frowned before asking in a hushed tone, “Hey Ajay, is today a special day of any kind? Any events or maybe a planet in retrograde or something?”

“Let me check.” Ajay’s eyes flashed blue for a few seconds. “No, everything about today is ordinary. The moon is in a waxing crescent shape, all planets are in regular alignment.” He paused. “Today is national pepperoni pizza day! Is that a special occasion?”

“No,” Trevor said. “I just wanted to check to see if there was a heightened supernatural energy for the day.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes when there is we get new people in town,” Trevor explained. New people, new monsters, po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe. All the same right?

Ajay tilted his head to the side.
