Bears paused before entering the Merc, as a man stepped in front of him. “Excuse me,” he murmured and then frowned as the man blocked his movement.

“You should be begging my pardon,” the man in dirty miner’s clothing said, stepping closer until they were nearly chest to chest.

Bears shook his head at the man. “By your clothes, you’re a miner. I have no quarrel with anyone from the mines.”

“Then you are as dumb as they say. I’m Asa Schuman, and you interfered with my courtship of Miss Fidelia Evans.” He pushed at Bears, forcing him back a pace. “How dare you believe you have the right to touch such a beautiful woman.”

Bears’s gaze glinted with anger, but he smiled in a self-deprecating manner. “I can understand your confusion, Mr. Schuman. I was just as astounded that such a discerning, intelligent woman would choose me.”

Asa’s gaze flit over Bears, and he shook his head in disgust. “No woman would choose a half-breed over a man like me. Did you appeal to her baser nature, as is her natural tendency, to entrap her?”

Bears stood taller, and his voice lowered with his rage. “You would do well to remember that you’re disparaging the woman who will be my wife.” He took a step forward, forcing Asa back. He nodded as the man seemed to recognize the veiled strength and threat in Bears’s words and actions. “You will never speak of Miss Evans in such a disrespectful manner again.”

The miner snorted. “It’s not as though everyone in the area don’t know what sort of woman she was.”

Bears gripped Asa’s neckcloth with lightning speed, dragging him up to his toes. “Yes, a respectable woman forced into a life she hated by horrible circumstances. If you want to have success with a woman who interests you in the future, I suggest you respect her, not insult her.” He released Asa, who collapsed to his knees, gasping for air. “Don’t bother us again, miner.”

Bears stepped around Asa and entered the Merc, meeting Tobias’s inquisitive stare. Tobias stood near the door with a broom in one hand. “Tobias,” Bears said with a nod.

Tobias nodded and set aside his broom. “For a moment there, I wasn’t sure who I’d use the broom on.”

Bears snorted and shook his head. “It’s not like you to show compassion to my intended. I’m surprised you didn’t join the miner in his abuse of her.”

Tobias straightened his shoulders and walked with stiff formality behind the counter. “I may have been incorrect in my assessment of her.” He met Bears’s incredulous stare. “Although I refuse to admit I was wrong.”

Bears smiled. “You will.” He let out a deep sigh as he looked at the section reserved for women’s clothes. “I need a red hair ribbon.”

“Red?” Tobias asked. He walked to the area and pulled out a tray that held the ribbons. “If it’s for your daughter, I’d suggest this pink.”

Bears fingered it, a dark pink that glimmered in the light. He nodded as he set down his coin.
