Telling or Info-Dumping
Peggy Malloy felt rotten.
Anonymous Terrible Author
Oh, really? I feel rotten too after reading that line. Telling is summary, a shortcut to speed your story along past the borÂing parts to get to the exciting stuff. Showing is making scenes stand out by putting extra attention on themâin enough detail so the reader can infer what's happening without the author having to summarize it for them. There's no good way to open with telling. Don't do it!
