One cold dawn, I laced on newly made moccasins, left Elly with strict instructions to stay (tied to a tree outside the tipi), and stalked the Etowah's floodplain just to see what I would see. The ground was like cold steel. The temperature had been hovering in the low teens for several nights, and the earth had clenched into a metallic fist, as though a heavy step might resound like the peal of an anvil struck by a hammer.

After an hour exploring the flood plain, I changed directions and stalked uphill, climbing above the sharp bite of humid air that pooled at the bottom of the valley. I kept my ascent slow, muscular, and fluid, grasping the earth with each step like the gentleness of a feather come to rest. Halfway up the slope I came face to face with a four-foot-long icicle clutching the overhang of a carsized boulder. The frozen stalactite tapered to a point like a single great fang. The perfectly formed sculpture was bright and clean and dry as bone. I leaned close, touching it, closed my eyes, and inhaled the cold fire emanating from its surface.
