Chapter Ten/5 Waiting (xū)

Cloud over Heaven: Part of the journey of righteousness is searching. While the power of Heaven is strong with the person, the appearance of water, clouds, means danger ahead. The sixth line (yin/six) moves in this reading: certain persons will have opportunity to advance, even with difficulty around.

He’s feeling his need to protect, to search someone out--the person who’s

hurting women. He relives the car chase and the gunfight in the park. But in remembering what else happened, the guilt rises as well. He travels through Elizabeth, through Wildemore, looking for Alex to tell him the truth. But only finds a card, a funeral card. Alex is dead.

But I didn’t know, he says out loud. I should have told you. He then finds himself in the jail. I have to help Veronica... And Sophie gives him another funeral card for Veronica. His panic rises; he needs to tell Danny he’s sorry now. But in going outside, he finds Danny’s funeral card on his car, and those for Jim and Michaela inside the car. He goes back to his apartment. And finds Kent in his apartment. Kent watches sadly, as he searches for Joel, to tell him he loves him before it’s too late. But Joel’s card is on his pillow in the bedroom. He falls down on his knees, screaming.

“This can’t be happening...”

“Gabriel, you have to be careful.”

“How could they all die and I don’t know about it, I can’t stop it?”

“It isn’t them.” Kent takes his hand and suddenly they’re in another place, where Raymond’s funeral was held. A coffin is ahead, draped with Buddhist prayer beads and flags. Chiang stands there with his hand on the coffin. Joel is on the floor, leaning up against the coffin.

He can’t see Joel’s face, but he feels his grief; watching Joel’s artist’s hands trace the initials GR on the casket. He senses the other persons in his life; he can see hazy versions of them walking by, not seeing him. The idea his body is in that casket is horrifying. He wants to scream, to take it away.

“No, I’m not dead. I haven’t crossed over. I don’t have the coins to pay for it. They promised they’d chant for me.”

“The Bardo Thodol...You went too fast. But you can go back, Gabriel. It isn’t set yet for you to cross over. You just need to be in the realm of the dead to be a protector. The Bodhisattva who went to the hells to rescue others. They will understand, but you must go to be reborn. “
