No one wants to be rid of the stereotypical and mistaken notion that we are a drain on the country’s resources more than us. We provided access to this country’s resources, and the prosperity Canadians have achieved is wholly based on our agreements to share those resources with settlers. To achieve reconciliation, we must be beneficiaries of those resources in equal measure.

It seems so daunting, looking at what is needed to set things right. And it is. But I look at the tremendous successes Indigenous Peoples have achieved despite the brutality of the colonial experience. I look at what we, this tiny percentage of the population, have been able to accomplish despite the determination of the colonial agenda to wipe us out. If our people, deep in the immediate impact of residential schools and other forms of colonial violence, could nonetheless rise up and change the Constitution to forever re-entrench our rights in it, imagine what the non-Indigenous community could do if they used their privilege, stood up, and fought for us the way we did.

Recently, during a speaking engagement, I was asked if I was hopeful about the future. I replied that I was. The questioner wondered out loud, how, in the face of the devastation we have come through and continue to survive, I could remain hopeful. I replied, “How can I not be?” Just as that broken, abused child clung to hope for a better life against all odds, I now stand firm in hope and determination that one day justice will prevail. I am thankful, profoundly thankful, for a deep idealism I somehow never lost.
