FINDING A NEW SPACE was a huge step, but to really make use of it, we’d need to vastly expand our operating budget. We were still the nonprofit equivalent of a ma-and-pop shop, just barely keeping the lights on. We needed funding and we needed partners.

I met with dozens of people, and dozens of people told me pretty quickly they thought my entire vision for City of Refuge was crazy. Attempting to have a one-stop shop for those in crisis was a foolish undertaking. “Focus on doing one thing really well,” they said. “Spreading yourself too thin will not allow for success,” they said. “You’re trying to do too much,” they said. Volunteers offered their suggestions and insights, even though they showed up once every six to twelve months. Donors let me know that the reason they were not going to grant our request for funding was because we were trying to be “all things to all people.” I was told I was foolish, unintelligent, stupid, misguided, arrogant, and doomed to failure.

I just kept going. Now that I was in nonprofit, benevolent-care work, holding back was not an option. The friends I was now meeting needed everything, and who was I to say that I would help them with something, but someone else would have to help them with the rest. No, a one-stop shop made sense, and if it made sense, then we would figure out how to not only build but maintain it and, eventually, expand it to offer the things that I didn’t yet know we needed.
