Chapter Thirteen

Somehow, by some miracle, the whole situation with Jeremy’s nightmare and lashing out didn’t actually end things between them, to Pascal’s relief. For the rest of that week, right until Jeremy arrived at his door on Saturday evening, Pascal had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. But it hadn’t. They were still doing their thing. And sure, there was a voice in the back of his head that sometimes whispered that maybe Jeremy was so keen to cook for them just so he wouldn’t have to hide in the bathroom whenever a delivery person came by. And yes, Pascal might wish for another sleepover or maybe a serious conversation about what had happened to Jeremy in the service. But he could also understand and respect boundaries. He’d known what he was signing up for from the start.

So, whatever they were doing, it wasn’t perfect, but Pascal was happy it was at least still going.

And most of the time it was enough. Really. He probably wouldn’t know what to do with a real, serious relationship in between his work hours and other commitments, so their arrangement—unspoken, of course—seemed like a good deal.

“What got you frowning so hard?” Jeremy asked, looking up from the cutting board on the other side of the table. He was making them some Korean dish Pascal wouldn’t even try to pronounce, but it smelled delicious. “You’re too young to have deep wrinkles like that.”

“And I don’t.” He straightened in his chair a bit and only realized he rubbed his forehead checking for those wrinkles when Jeremy chuckled. “Shut up.”

“Is it that meeting on Friday?”

“No, it actually got pushed to next week.” Pascal wasn’t too happy about it, but the budget committee was their greatest hurdle yet, so maybe it was good that they had a few more days.

“Want me to keep guessing or do you not want to talk about it at all?” Jeremy asked after Pascal didn’t follow up with an explanation.

“It’s nothing, really.” Pascal shrugged. “Or a bit of everything. You know those days. I’m probably just tired.”

Jeremy didn’t look convinced, but he nodded anyway and Pascal was grateful. Having to explain his bad day could easily turn into a fight and that was the last thing he needed. What little time he had with Jeremy, he didn’t want to waste it. And he really enjoyed just hanging out with him, talking about anything and watching him cook. Sex was nice and good—okay, scratch that, the sex was amazing—but there was more to them than that. Sure, it was hardly a serious relationship, but it wasn’t all focused on sex.

Maybe that was what people called being friends with benefits.

Yeah, right. If that was the case then Pascal wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who didn’t want to end up with a bruised heart. Because as fun as it was, he was sure one day Jeremy was going to call it off, tired of sneaking around, but unwilling to commit enough to come out and face the consequences of hiding for so long.
