Chapter Six

Raina woke up the next morning driven from the bed to the bathroom.

She dropped to her knees and threw up anything that hadn’t been digested from the night before. Her head spun like a top, and her stomach roiled.

The fresh scent of soap she’d loved the day before weakened her today.

She slumped against the wall beside the toilet, waiting for the room to stop spinning. When it did, she worked her way to her to knees, but she almost pitched forward. Out of nowhere, Hunter was there, and he pulled her onto his lap as he sat on the edge of the tub.

“I’m fine,” she mumbled. Trying to get off his lap was an exercise in futility. Hunter held on. “Okay, okay just for a minute.”

A minute turned into much longer, but after a while, Raina forced herself to get mobile. She hadn’t wanted Hunter to see her this way, but now that he did, she could only hope he didn’t put two and two together.

By the time she made it to the breakfast table, Raina wanted nothing more than toast and the fruit juice that had become her staple when she couldn’t eat.

After two slices of dry toast and a huge glass of cranberry-grape juice, she felt like she could function. Trying to pretend she hadn’t just emptied her stomach, she turned to Hunter with somewhat of a smile. The least she could do was make him breakfast for that display. Maybe the smells wouldn’t be so bad now. The offer trembling on her lips froze at the look on his face.

“No alcohol, bigger breasts, morning sickness…” he ticked off on his fingers.

If she was lighter skinned, she’d have flushed.

“You’re pregnant,” he accused her. “When were you going to tell me?” A thought seemed to occur to him. “You let me take you too rough last night. Damn it, Raina, what were you thinking? Is it…is it his?”
