Military Client Censorship

It is worth noting that some military clients may reflexively edit their responses to the therapist, particularly so with male clients with female therapists. This will be evident by the absence or apologizing for any slips of vulgarity or language that others may offend. Service members may also try to sanitize their narrative to shield the therapist from exposure to the horrors of human violence, or white wash information that may paint themselves in an unfavorable light. A therapist believing that his or her client may be filtering their responses might say, “It’s really important for me to be able to understand the world through your eyes, so don’t worry about offending or upsetting me, just tell me what is your honest gut response—can you do that?”
