Once you tackle standing on one leg, the next step will be for you to stand on one leg with your eyes closed. Without being able to see, you will have to rely even more on your sense of proprioception to stand on one leg, which will work your proprioception even harder. Now let’s take a closer look at the exercises.
Proprioception exercise 1: eyes open
Stand on one leg in the position illustrated in Figure 4.1. The knee can be straight or slightly bent, whichever is more comfortable.
If you can’t stand on one leg at all, or if you can but you’re really off balance and might fall, you can stand next to a table, chair, or doorway – something you can lightly hold on to.
Repeat the exercise on the other leg if you wish.
When you can stand well balanced on either leg for 30 full seconds, without holding on to anything, move on to exercise 2.
