Feminists have largely embraced the role of neuroscience within trauma research, and for understandable reasons: neuroscientific discourses have reached a position of immense esteem and prominence within the global north, with the result being an era of “neuroenchantment” (Ali, Lifshitz, & Raz, 2014). The allure of neuroscience reflects an increasing preoccupation within highly medicalised societies with brain processes, based on the notion that the brain is the location of the “modern self” (Vidal, 2009). Consequently, “brain claims” are often met with excitement and at times an undue lack of caution regarding their relevance to an ever-increasing range of social policy areas (Macvarish, Lee, & Lowe, 2014). Neuro-discourses are drawn upon in the context of trauma-informed practice to add weight to the claim that gender-based violence is a serious issue, with immense consequences for women and children that cannot be trivialised:

the present study provides evidence for the neuroanatomical injury associated with self-blame attributions, and emphasizes the need for a change in current social stand [sic] toward sexually assaulted individuals.
