Four years ago Gareth Hoddle was imprisoned for six months after being caught with a home-made drone which he was using to fly drugs into Long Lartin high security jail in Worcestershire where his brother Michael was serving three years for assault. Ministry of Justice experts who examined the tiny and almost silent drone were impressed with the innovations Hoddle had made to improve the original commercial model. He was clearly an electronics genius. In what must be regarded as a very successful piece of rehabilitation, Hoddle was offered early release and persuaded by his probation officer to act as a consultant for the Home Office developing a drone- killing drone. In six months of testing at Wandsworth Prison, Hoddle’s Whisperkill device intercepted 17 drugs and mobile phone consignments which would otherwise have made it to the cell windows of the Victorian-era building. Hoddle’s used a microphone attuned to the noise of drones to find them, even in darkness, and then drape an entangling net into their rotors.

But it was a second device, developed as a hobby, that attracted the interest of the police. Betty, as Hoddle called her, was a cheap radio-controlled toy car less than six inches long. Stripped of its chassis, with silent rubber wheels and a noise-suppressed motor, Betty had two directional rotors made from the necks of plastic bottles which enabled it to fly nimbly, or when turned horizontally to simply power it along any smooth surface. With the electric motor set for crawl speed, and with a powerful microphone and micro-camera, Betty could safely sneak up close to hostage takers without being noticed.

Today was the first time she had been used in a siege.
