Hair
For both trans women and men (but especially trans women), hair is an important part of our appearance, so this was one of the first steps in my transition I wanted to address. Although my hair was beginning to recede and get thinner, spironolactone and estrogen quickly put a stop to that, leaving me with the hair I currently have. Sure, I wanted that pulled-back ponytail look, like so many women have, but, because of my receding hairline, I was not comfortable enough to attempt that hairstyle, so I parted my hair down the middle and created bangs to hide my receding hairline. It was not my first choice, but considering I am in my late 50s I have worked with what I have and am now very pleased with the way my hair looks. I also found a hairdresser who taught me how to make my hair look fuller by using different styling techniques and hair products. In addition, he added hair extensions, which I found to be extremely effective in giving me a thicker head of hair. My hairstyle is not the perfect look that I originally envisioned, but I have found a way to make it work, and that has helped to diminish my hair dysphoria.
By the way, growing your hair long is not always the best choice for the most feminine look. I did not let anyone cut my hair for years because all I wanted was super-long hair. I finally decided to let my hairstylist cut off about two inches as I sat there and cried. However, the result looked amazing and I ended up receiving more compliments having shorter hair. It is not always about the length but rather about the style.
Many trans women may have already lost their hair, but today there are so many great alternatives. Wigs and extensions can work extremely well, so contact boutiques who work with the trans population and you will be amazed at what can be done. Before my hair grew, I had to wear a wig for two years, so I researched boutiques and luckily found one in my area that had knowledgeable employees who were extremely supportive and affirming in helping to find a wig that looked natural. If fitted with a wig correctly, nobody will suspect you are wearing one, so until there is a magic pill that will truly grow hair, have fun experimenting with lots of different styles until you find the look that works best for you.
For trans men, a common side effect of testosterone is a receding hairline. This is something that some guys embrace, whereas others are not so happy but realize it is simply a part of being a guy. A big concern for most trans men is how much facial hair they will develop. Facial hair is extremely important and affirming to many guys who are transitioning. If facial hair is not visible right away, be patient because it can take several months to several years to reach maximum potential.
