Two blocks from the Cos, Chase circled back thirty feet. He rested his hand on Switchbladeâs arm. âThe bleeding stopped. Can you make it the rest of the way?â
âJust had to slow down a minute. You think the nano stuff bleeding out will take me down the way it does you?â
âMy processors rely on the nanobots. Itâs not the same for you. But itâs only been a couple of days since you were injured. Your bodyâs still recovering.â
âMy body recovered as soon as the doctor pumped your blood into me.â Switchblade threw his shoulders back and stepped up his pace. âCome on. Our two hours is about up. Donât want Melody coming after us. Girlâs got a temper.â
âI was about to face that wrath when you came up on us today.â
âWhatâd you do, robot?â
âI know we said we wouldnât tell her about the transfusion, but I donât want any more secrets between us.â Chase rounded the corner a block from the monstrous building.
âLet me tell her. She might love you more, but sheâll yell at me less.â
Chase laughed. âYouâre right. Maybe sheâd go easy on me if we tell her together.â
They entered through the big doors with five minutes to spare. Plenty of time to get to the command center. Chase sucked in a breath. He had to straighten the paths between the exoself and Melâs code. And he had to get the bases back online. The lack of communication between up-top believers worried him.
They exited the lift on the twentieth floor. Switch pushed the door open and entered the command center first. And it took Mel only seconds to react to the sight of his mutilated jacket and bloody arm.
âI knew something like this would happen.â She ran to Switchblade and grasped his hands. âHow bad are you hurt?â
âItâs nothing. Just a cut.â
She eyed Chase. âTell me the truth.â
He nodded, and she let go of Switchblade and threw her arms around Chase. âAre you all right? Iâve been so worried. Youâve got to get the screen communication working again so we wonât be out of touch.â She let him go and lowered her brow. âBetter yet, donât go off like that again. Do you understand?â
Before he could answer, she had Switchblade by the arm, dragging him back to the lift.
âMel? Where are you going?â Chase called after her.
âClinic on the tenth floor. Come on.â
Chase followed, and the lift headed down at Melâs command.
Switchblade leaned against the opaque wall of the lift. âMelody, we was gonna have a talk with you about some things that happened on the way to Detroit.â
âFirst, tell me what the two of you have been doing out there today.â She stepped close to Chase as the lift door opened. âI know you want to help people. But itâs too dangerous. Please, for my sake, tell me you wonât make a habit of this.â
He sank into her brown eyes. But he couldnât make her any promises.
âWeâll talk about this later.â She walked ahead and pushed open the door to reveal a small medical facility.
