The fidelity belly, shown on the next page, is the no-man’s-land of consumer products. Movie theaters, music CDs, Blu-ray video disks, electronic book readers, electric cars, and film cameras have all found themselves in that no-man’s-land.

Certainly not every company can be the absolute leader on convenience or fidelity. On that fidelity/convenience chart, most of an industry’s players would be plotted all over. Some would be a little less convenient than the convenience leader, but still convenient enough to gain a sizable market. There are different ways of doing well in terms of the fidelity/convenience trade-off. For instance, few bands can put on a U2-style super-fidelity stadium rock concert with requisite lasers and explosions and set changes. But a lesser band might have success playing in smaller venues, and charging lower prices, which would make that band relatively more convenient for fans, but still a relatively high-fidelity music experience compared with sitting at home and listening to a stereo. Samsung cell phones, Sharp TVs, Sonic burger joints, and Marriott hotels are all examples of businesses that may not be either the most convenient or the highest-fidelity—but are good enough in terms of convenience or fidelity to do well.
