Hearing about these letters almost provoked in me the same tearful reaction I’d had when I heard the verdict. In particular, the words of Robert Howard—a man I never personally met, but will always be grateful to—were moving and reaffirming.

Six days after Mr. Howard wrote that letter, on October 22, Judge Bolanos issued an order denying Monsanto the JNOV. But she also lowered the total award to Johnson to $78 million. I knew that Miller and his team would reluctantly agree to the lower award, as they were shifting their focus to future trials. To fight it would have meant a retrial. Nobody wanted that.

And so, with a rap of Judge Bolanos’s gavel, this legal encore was complete. The way I look at it, the group that had insisted on coming back out and playing one more song that no one wanted to hear had been booed off the stage.

There would still be a formal appeal, which would also be denied, but for all practical purposes, the historic Lee Johnson trial was done.
