Sensory Stimulation: Sound

Depending on the specific causes of a “stuck” nervous system, any stimulus, if administered properly, theoretically is capable of rebooting that system. In the Zen tradition, for example, there are many stories of a Roshi (teacher) working with a student who suddenly slaps a sandal on the floor, and this unexpected stimulus jolts the student into an awareness that he or she was previously unable to attain. In many traditions, chanting and singing are used to facilitate healing. Individuals have reported an unexpected connection to the “music of the spheres” that has profoundly changed their perception of the world.

My friend and colleague Joel Friedman, MD (who describes the use of ketamine in Chapter 19), has studied the Australian instrument the digeridoo and uses the vibrations he elicits from it to create healing shifts in the nervous system for many of his patients. See also the reference on here to the Electronic Ear and other treatments that use music and vocalization to reboot the nervous system.
