Chapter NINE
“Oh my gosh!” Brynn cried as she and Ben exited a funky antique store and back out onto the hot street. “You are not the world’s biggest fan of The Soup! I am! Oh, dude, I quote it all the time.”
Ben just smiled. “It’s so . . . meaty,” he said, quoting one of the show’s famous catchphrases. “Yeah, I love Joel McHale. In fact, I would love to host that show someday. Can you imagine?”
Brynn grinned. She could totally imagine it—because she often fantasized about having that very job herself. Of course, all the hosts in the history of The Soup had a strong background in comedy, so if she really wanted it, she would have to bulk up her skills. “I really want to start a comedy improv group at school,” she admitted, giving Ben a sly glance. “Am I crazy? I mean, it could be totally humiliating.”
Ben gawped at her. “Are you kidding?” he asked. “It’s like you have a window into my brain. I started one at my school in January—and yeah, we’ve totally humiliated ourselves many times, but we’ve had some great shows, too. And it’s always fun.”
Brynn bit her lip. She’d been smiling so much during their conversation, she wondered if she looked ridiculous. But it was hard not to smile when Ben was around. He just so totally, totally got her—talking to him was like talking to a male version of herself, but better. Cuter.
“Well,” she said, trying to put her face back in a normal expression, “if I’m seeing correctly through that window into your mind, I believe I’m seeing a hankering for ice cream? A hankering that maybe Scoops down the street would help you out with.”
Ben looked at her, shaking his head. “You’re amazing,” he said. “Are you craving ice cream, too?”
Brynn nodded. “Yup. I’m going to get . . .” She paused, grinning at him, challenging him to choose the same flavor.
Ben put his hand to his temple, like he was consulting a place deep inside his brain. “Cookie dough!” he shouted, at the same time Brynn announced, “Cherry vanilla!”
“Aw,” said Ben, shaking his head in mock disappointment. “Can’t win ’em all, I guess. And besides—cherry vanilla? Who gets that?”
Brynn shrugged. “I do,” she replied. By this time, they had reached Scoops, so she pulled open the door and walked in.
Once they were settled at a booth, Brynn and Ben couldn’t help poring over the menu, looking at the array of sundaes and treats that were available. “I don’t think they serve this at the mess hall,” Ben observed dryly, pointing at a photo of an enormous banana split.
Brynn nodded. “That thing is huge. Definitely a special-occasion sundae.”
Ben closed his menu and looked directly into Brynn’s eyes. “Well, I think this is,” he said quietly, a smile spreading over his face. “A special occasion, I mean.”
Brynn’s heart pounded. On the one hand, that was exactly what she wanted to hear from Ben—some evidence that he liked her, that their connection was as obvious to him as it was to her.
