Sancho IV’s preparations for the afterlife did not include the provision of anniversary masses, which were only properly endowed by Alfonso XI in 1317.66 Ten years later Alfonso was obliged to regulate the royal chapel’s income yet further, and in January 1339 he entirely reorganized the chapel’s income along the lines of Seville’s royal chapel and established a new head chaplain.67 At the same time, he ordered the repair of “the painted panos of the kings, which were torn.”68 These probably correspond to the gold heraldic cloths, paños, that were draped over the tombs in Toledo’s other royal chapel in the 1380s.69
