“Did you have to go through all this?” Hans-Peter demanded, later at the deli.

“All what?” I replied.

“Interviews and insane people and bees!”

He seemed freaked, but filled me on about his Brandenburg interview.

“The Brandenburgs are unique,” I told him, “but not that unique. If you want to go to the Peshtigo School, get used to it.”

Because Prospective Students Day, and hence the USCACA protest about Ms. Wilson and the electrical experiments, was fast approaching, I had asked Shawna and Eleanor to meet me at the deli to finalize our plans.

But I still had to work at the deli, so Shawna and Eleanor took notes while I dictated instructions and placard text. Meanwhile, I was also busy stocking the shelves with those items that would appeal most to those who were partaking of the festivities of Wurstfest Chicago.

“What is going on here?” Opa interrupted. “What part of this am I paying for?”

“I’m getting paid?” I asked. This was news to me.

“Not for gossiping with your friends,” Opa replied.

“I wasn’t gossiping,” I told him. “I’m stocking the shelves and also trying to figure out our next school protest.”

“Ja, well,” Opa replied. “You, get back to work. You —” and he glared at Shawna and Eleanor “— go home and do your homework or whatever it is you should be doing.”

“We were waiting for Freddie so we could help build the float,” Eleanor said.

“Then go across the street to the konditerei, have some coffee, and wait for her there,” Opa replied. “She will be off at five o’clock.”

As Eleanor and Shawna trudged off, Opa told me he was going down to see the Do Your Wurst people about something, and that the health inspector was coming, but that Hans-Peter and Mrs. Fraunhofer knew what to do.
